Year 7
NEW CURRICULUM FOR SEPTEMBER 2021
In Year 7 pupils design and make a cushion in the style of the artist Romero Britto, to reflect his ‘Happy Art Movement’. Britto uses bold colours, simple shapes, and constructed in a mosaic style. Always cheerful and bright, the pupils design a motif and plan how the pieces will fit together and which colours to use for the contrast stitch. Sewing skills are built on from key stage 2, overstitch is now very visible as a decorative contrast to the appliqué pieces and pupils learn how to thread and use a sewing machine to make the cushion become a 3D item. Pupils can extend the task by adding extra embellishment, such as sequins, quilted 3D sections and additional mini motifs. All practical work is supported with design and evaluation tasks, as well as a study of the inspirational Britto.
